# Editing an existing zone When editing an existing zone, there are two ways to do it and picking the right one is important. These are the two use-cases of editing a zone: 1. Geometry, name or type of an existing zone needs to be redefined. * Small changes to the geometry or the type * As an example, if the crusher area is defined too small and it needs to be expanded, this is the right option. 2. Existing zone becomes obsolete and should not be used for future calculations. * Larger change if the layout of the Quarry changes. * As an example there is no need for Zone 1 anymore, instead there is a new larger area called Zone 1B, that also covers part of Zone 1. * This workflow means that the older reports stay as they were, but the old Zone 1 will not be taken into account. ## Use-case 1 Access the Civil 3d add-on and log in to the right tenant. ### Check-out zone(s) Next step is to check-out the existing zones, by clicking Check-out and going through the dialog.

Check-out is found by right clicking the zones

Select the zones options from the Layers.

Select the right version, by default, the current version should be used.

Choose the right coordinate system, if the default is not the right one.

Last option allows to zoom to or select features, that are being checked-out from the server to the drawing.

To check-out the features (meaning that these will be drawn on the active dwg) and close the dialog, click Finish. ### Edit zone(s) Zone geometry can be edited by selecting a zone and by moving the grips of the geometry. Editing of an Mpolygon object in Civil 3d can be done by using MAPMPEDIT command. If the naming or zone type needs to be changed, that can be done by selecting the zone from the drawing and opening the properties. Within properties scroll to the bottom and adjust the needed metadata. ### Check-in zone(s) After zone has been edited, it needs to be checked-in to the server. This is done the same way as when creating a new zone. Select the zone(s), click Check-in and proceed through the dialog. The changes are updated to the database right away. ## Use-case 2 In this use-case, the new zone needs be created like described in the [creating-a-new-zone](https://help.besmart.software/be.smart-site-management/en-site-productivity/asset-management/zones/creating-a-new-zone "mention"). However, once there is a new zone available, the old one needs to be deactivated. This can be done via the web platform. Access the Zones -menu within the web platform.

Edit the zone that needs to be deactivated.

Then assign Valid To -date for the zone and submit the changes.

Now the old zone is deactivated, old reports are not being recalculated and the new zone will be taken into account with the future reports. Once the editing is finished, the changes can be saved by clicking **Submit** or those can be discarded by clicking **Cancel**.
